It will identify the children who need help and support with their reading skills. Children will retake if they did not reach the required level.’ (DFE 2011)

The Phonic Screening test measures the ability children’s ability to use phonological knowledge to read real and made up words. Phonological knowledge is an awareness of the sound structure of the language and how sounds are represented by letters. This knowledge, and the ability to apply it, is seen as a key early reading skills. Two key areas of learning are blending (putting identified sounds together) and segmenting (being able to split a word up by identifying the different sounds within it). These results show that pupils at Polesden Lacey have made rapid progress by the end of Year 1.
